Can Manchester United really cope without central midfield additions?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has came out and stated in the press that he won’t be making any more signings this summer.

That means the much expected replacement for the retired Paul Scholes won’t be arriving this summer.

Satisfied

Speaking after the friendly victory over MLS side Chicago Fire he told press: “ We are always looking for good quality players,”

“We started the season with the players we have and I am satisfied with that. We are not looking at the moment but we are looking at combinations of central midfielders now at the club.”

The central midfield is probably United’s weakest area of the team and after losing Scholes it’s now even weaker. He may not have played every game but he did still have something left to contribute to the team.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s options are really not all that good. Last season the Red Devils won the Premier League but this season will be even harder.

Options

So Sir Alex is going to use his existing midfielders. He is a great manager, maybe even the greatest English football has ever seen but I believe he has dropped the ball on this one. The United midfield is weak and opposition teams know that.

Energetic

I think the best central midfielder United have to offer is Darren Fletcher. The Scot has proved to be a very consistent performer over the last few seasons and cemented his place in the United team.

Inconsistent

Brazilian midfielder Anderson arrived with a big reputation and big price tag. He was suppose to be the future of the United midfield but he has never been able to find any sort of consistency.

England international Michael Carrick has also had a similar problems in recent seasons. He was previously considered as a player who could make things happen from the centre of the pitch but he seems to be doing that less and less.

Older

At times last season Sir Alex decided to play Ryan Giggs in central midfield. He can be effective as a temporary stopgap. However at 37 he is not a long-term solution and is starting to show his age.

Young

There is even a theory that youngster Tom Cleverley may get his chance in the centre of midfield, after impressing on-loan at Wigan Athletic last season. However he has only one full season of Premier League football under his belt.

Normal

United currently don’t possess a special midfielder, they are all pretty much bog standard players with no unique qualities. They may be good enough to challenge for the Premier League title next season but that midfield won’t stand up against the best in Europe.

Special

The reason Manchester United have been linked with players such as Wesley Sneijder, Samir Nasri and Luka Modric is that all those players are capable of producing pieces of skill from the centre of midfield.

Every great team needs a midfield playmaker who can dictate the play, produce a defence splitting pass or score a goal from nothing. The current United central midfield players don’t do that on a regular enough basis.

New

United always have the option of playing Ashley Young in the centre of midfield or as a second striker and using him as the playmaker. They could even deploy Wayne Rooney in the same way.

Trust

United boss Sir Alex must have seen something in training that everybody else hasn’t. The Scot must have something up his sleeve if he is saying that the club aren’t going to sign anybody. United fans you’ll just have to trust the Scot’s judgement on this one!

Should have Manchester United signed a new central midfielder?

As much as I can’t see anyone special in the central midfield area of Man Utd’s current squad, Sir Alex can hardly be accused of not knowing what he’s doing considering his record over a great many years. If he is genuinely happy with his squad, and this is not another smokescreen to cover a late swoop for someone, then every one will have to trust his (rarely wrong) judgement. On another note, the use of the English language in many of these posts is appaling, what are they teaching in schools these days? Or maybe it’s the fact that most Man Utd fans aren’t english (let alone from Manchester) and don’t speak the language of our once great nation?

NOW IN WORLD I THINK UNITED IS AT 2ND NUMBER& FIRST IS BARCA..
MAN UTD CAN BEAT ANY TEAM WITH THERE CURENT SQUAD BUT TO BEAT OPPONENT LIKE BARCA ,MADRID THEY REQUIRE A ATTACKING MIDFIELDER SUCH AS “Wesley Sneijder”.HIS SHORT AND LONG PASSING ARE AWESOME & LONG RANE SHOOTING ,FINISHING,CROSSING & EVERYTHING IS AWESOME AS A LEADING PLAYMAKER.SO FERGIE SHOULD GET HIM…

ha ha ha you guys crack me up, i skim Fergie is making a huge mistake leaving the signings of Nasri and Sneijder, if i was him i would of done anything to sign those players instead of wasting so much cash on such unpredictable talent, me surely not a fan of Phil Jones, my team now would be
    GK – De Gea
    Def- smalling ferdinand evra vidic
Mid – Young Fletcher(even though his a complete chop) Valencia and Nani
    Att – Berbatov Rooney
Subs – Park ji sung, Hernandez, Welbeck, Macheda, Rafael, Fabio, Jones

drop to second team or even better free agent
    CARRICK, jones, fletcher, Giggs,

I trust fergie. He knows his team better than anyone and if he thinks the player to cover scholes is already in the squad then there’s no need for a panic to sign a big name.

    Boys,
Sir Alex is probably the greatest ever manager to grace the EPL, trust his judgement.
Tom Cleverley and Darron Gibson are both awesome players for their age.
I trust furgie and the rest of united would to. This would be a huge bolt of condifence to the team.

Yes we can probably win the league but without a special midfielder we can’t and won’t beat the likes of Barca and Madrid. We couldn’t do it last year and that was with Scholes, now we don’t even have him. I think SAF is whistling in the dark. If Chelsea and Man City upgrade their midfields we are toast.

It’s hard not to trust him.. Everyone said that united didn’t have any ‘special’ players last season, and they still won the league.. And made it to the final of the champions league.. So who knows and anyway he says no more signings but he mighy change his mind. I feel it’s going to be hard to beat Liverpool and Chelsea this time around but lets wait and see.
