Can PSG become a dominant force in European football?

French giants PSG have made quite a big splash in the transfer market in the past few transfer windows.

This summer the mega-rich French club have acquired the services of big stars from Italy’s Serie A.

Mercurial Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazilian defender Thiago Silva arrived from AC Milan and exciting attacker Ezequiel Lavezzi joined from fellow Serie A club Napoli.

Champions

Last season everybody expected PSG to run away with the French Ligue One title. However, it seems that things didn’t quite go to plan for the Parisians. Little Montpellier hadn’t read the script and in true romantic style claimed the league title.

Montpellier on a budget did what PSG couldn’t do with a vast fortune. Montpellier have been a victim of their own success in a strange way. They have lost star striker Olivier Giroud to Arsenal and top European clubs are circling their other top stars. They are unlikely to be such a strong threat in the new campaign.

The first step to European dominance will be for PSG to win the Ligue One title. Its been 18 years since the club have won the French league title and surely that end will wait this season?

Rich

PSG are now one of the richest clubs in the world courtesy of being took over by Qatar Investment Authority. It seems the clubs owners are intent on making PSG one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

And it doesn’t seem like they are scare to flaunt their cash. The club heavily invested last summer and this summer has signed even bigger name players.

Ligue One

The standard of Ligue One hasn’t been the best in recent years. Although, it has been one of the most open leagues in Europe. Their has been no dominant force since the days of Lyon dominating the league and challenging in the Champions League.

PSG will be hoping for a similar sort of dominance of the French top flight. However, Ligue One is just the first step to bigger things. They can’t fulfil their owners lofty ambitions just by dominating Ligue One.

Even at the height of Lyon’s domination of French football they were still not considered one of the biggest clubs in the world. It was only when they started making an impact in the Champions League that their reputation grew.

Speculation

Due to their huge financial resources PSG has been linked with moves for every man and his dog this summer. The latest player to be linked with the French club is England and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole.

However, former-Chelsea and current PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that the club don’t intend on spending anymore money this summer. This will come as a surprise to many, but they have already spent a vast fortune assembling a squad they believe is capable of making an impact at home and abroad.

Talented

The squad that Ancelotti has assembled looks like they could be very tasty this season. The additions of Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Lavezzi is a sign of intent from the Parisians that they really do mean business this season.

Add the talents of Ibrahimovic and Lavezzi, to the likes of Javier Pastore and Jeremy Menez, and it seems like PSG could be a very dangerous attacking force.

Determined

PSG’s owners are very ambitious and look determined to establish the club among the elite of European football. They must currently be looking at what Manchester City have achieved in the Premier League with envious eyes.

However, City now seems to be the blueprint of the club trying to compete with the established elite, by sending big and buying the best players they can. I have no doubt that PSG will emulate City’s success in Ligue One. As Manchester City proved last season though success in Europe is a lot harder to achieve.

From the noises coming out of the French club the owners won’t be happy until they are top of the European football tree. That’s easier said than done though and PSG still have a lot of hard work ahead of them to become a major player on the European football scene.

A Champions League for PSG will help Europe… Its sickening to have the trophy move between two countries (England and Spain), and when really lucky, Italy. I am a Man Utd fan… And a HUGE supporter of Real Madrid. And I REALLY love Messi. But its too much!!!
