Can Sven inspire Leicester to promotion after big summer spending?

I have to say I was really surprised when former-England boss Sven Goran-Eriksson decided to take the Leicester City job.

After the Notts County debacle I thought he would have learnt his lesson about the lower leagues of English football.

Ambitious

However Leicester City are an ambitious club. Previously an established Premier League club the Foxes are hoping that Sven can take them back to their former glories. The veteran boss has been given major funds to spend to strengthen his squad.

Signings

The Foxes hierarchy have really put their money where their mouth is this summer. Sven has made some impressive signings this summer here is a summary of those new signings:

Kasper Schmeichel (Leeds)

This move came as a shock to many Leeds fans and I have to admit that it surprised me as well. The 24 year-old keeper is highly-rated and is expected to have a bright future in the game.

For a fee of just £1.2millon I think he will prove to be a bargain and more importantly a solid presence between the sticks. Sven had knowledge of the keeper from their days at Manchester City and I’m sure he knows just how good he can become.

Matthew Mills (Reading)

Mills is another player that the Swede knows from his time in Manchester. Mills struggled to gain a place in the City first team but since leaving the club he has blossomed.  He built a reputation firstly at Doncaster and for the last few years at Reading.

The 24 year-old was a crucial part of Reading’s good Championship campaign last season. The centre-back wasn’t just the rock at the back of the defence he was also the captain and leader of the side.

Mills was linked with moves to the likes of Premier League sides Wolves and Bolton before making the £4million move to the King Power Stadium. This deal is something of a coup for the Foxes with the club having beaten off Premier League rivals for Mills signature.

David Nugent (Portsmouth)

My name sake will no doubt prove a shrewd free signing from Sven. The one-time England international has struggled for goals in his spells in the top flight but has enjoyed better times in the Championship.

I’m sure he will score goals again in the Championship and a move to Leicester could prove the ideal one for the 26 year-old striker.

Neil Danns (Crystal Palace)

Danns is another good Championship player and on a free transfer could be a great signing. The 28 year-old has made a name for himself as a hardworking, energetic midfielder. He has also developed a knack of scoring vital goals.

Sean St Ledger (Preston)

Irish international defender St Ledger joined the club from Preston for an undisclosed fee. The experienced defender is a solid centre-back, who in recent years has proved himself to be a reliable Championship performer.

This is another good signing for Leicester and their Swedish boss. St Ledger won’t let anybody down and could forge a good partnership with Mills at the heart of the Foxes defence.

Owen Hargreaves ?

Former-Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves is without a club after enduring a nightmare two years with injury. He has recently released videos of his training to prove his fitness to find a new club.

Leicester boss Eriksson has admitted he would like the former-England international to join his club. So don’t be surprised if the midfielder is playing Championship football next season.

Promotion

All these summer signings have helped strengthen the Foxes squad ahead of the new Championship campaign. I don’t think Eriksson has finished his summer transfer business just yet.

The Foxes must now been seen as one of the strongest teams in the Championship for next season. I think they will definitely be in the running for a position in the top six, if not the top two in the coming season.

Can Sven Goran-Eriksson help Leicester to promotion next season?
