(GSM) – Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Canales has issued an apology to the club’s fans following his appearance in a Real Madrid shirt for a media interview.

While the 19-year-old has already agreed a deal that will see him join the Santiago Bernabeu club in the summer, he will continue to play for relegation threatened Santander in the meantime.

Canales, who has risen through the youth ranks of Racing, has been a key figure in the Cantabrian outfit’s battle to beat the drop.

However, he was pictured wearing the famous white jersey of los Merengues while speaking to daily sports paper Marca for an in-depth interview.

The incident has caused such outrage amongst the club’s supporters, that the Spaniard has apologised for the incident, admitting it was a “mistake”.

He said: “I understand why the fans are unhappy and why they are angry and I apologise for that. I want to make it clear I am here to help Racing.

“I did it and it is done and I have to face up to that. I know I cannot hide. I recognise that I made a mistake and I will learn from it.

“Now I am completely focussed on Racing. We are a team and the team does not depend on one person.”
