Fabio Capello said Antonio Conte deserves most of the credit for Juventus’ resurgence this season.
The England manager led juve to back-to-back Scudetto successes from 2004 to 2006, though both titles were subsequently revoked as part of the fallout from the match-fixing scandal.
Conte, meanwhile, has reinvigorated the club since taking charge last summer and Sunday’s victory at Atalanta saw Juve crowned ‘winter champions’.
Capello feels that the former Italy midfielder’s achievement commands respect because he does not believe that Conte has the same quality of player he had at his disposal.
“Conte has brought back the true Juventus spirit,” he told La Domenica Sportiva.
“My Juventus had players of another level, so it’s his merit.”
However, Capello believes that Claudio Marchisio has developed into a player that would have graced his starting line-up.
“Marchisio was good during my spell but not yet ready,” he said.
“At his level now, he would play also in that team.”
Juventus lead Serie A by a point from defending champions AC Milan.
