(GSM) – Benfica are in second place in the Portuguese league following a narrow victory over Sporting Braga on Sunday.

With two Portuguese and seven South American players in the starting line-up, Benfica hoped to get their third league win in a row and bounce back from their Champions League defeat by Schalke 04.

The match at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz had been under way for 73 minutes when one of the two Portuguese players, Carlos Martins, scored what turned out to be the only goal.

Benfica are now in second place, at six points from leaders Porto who still have Monday’s game at Vitoria Guimaraes in hand. Braga drop to fifth place.
