Carragher´s final Liverpool appearance full of emotion

Jamie Carragher was proud to end his Liverpool career with a victory over QPR on an emotional day at Anfield for the 35-year-old.

The defender made his 737th and final appearance for the club in their 1-0 victory on Sunday and admitted it was a proud and emotional day for him and his family.

Carragher was given a guard of honour before kick-off by players and officials from both sides, before Brendan Rodgers’ side dominated the game and secured all three points thanks to Philippe Coutinho’s third goal of the season.

“It was very emotional,” Carragher said. “Especially for my friends and family in the stands who have been there to watch me all the time, but that’s come to an end now unfortunately.

“I think the club is in good hands, we’ve had a good run in the second half of the season and hopefully can go from strength to strength.

“I wanted to say thank you to the supporters as that was important. It was a game we wanted to win and it was nice for my children to be involved.

“There wouldn’t have been anything worse than going out with a defeat today or a poor performance that would have nagged away at me so it was just nice to keep a clean sheet and win the game.”

The defender nearly capped his long career with the club with a stunning 35-yard strike in front of the Kop, but his strike crashed against the post, denying him the sixth goal for Liverpool.

“I can’t believe it never went in,” he added. “I scored on my debut fortunately 15, 16 years ago and it would have been nice to finish that way but it wasn’t to be.”
