Cattermole pens new Sunderland deal

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole has signed a new four-year deal with the club which keeps him at the Stadium of Light until 2016.

The midfielder signed a four-year deal upon joining the Black Cats from Wigan in 2009 which was set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Cattermole was made Sunderland captain at the start of the 2010-11 season, replacing Lorik Cana, but has come under criticism for his aggressive style of play.

He has collected five red cards since arriving on Wearside and made his return to the team against Stoke City on Saturday having been dismissed in the League Cup against MK Dons at the end of September.

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill warned Cattermole to improve his discipline after the incident but also praised his start to the 2012-13 campaign and has now rewarded him with a new deal.

The 24-year-old former England Under-21 international progressed through Middlesbrough’s youth ranks before joining Wigan in 2008.

There he played under Steve Bruce and the former Manchester United defender spent six million pounds to move Cattermole back to the north east when he took over as Sunderland boss in 2009.
