Cerezo: Villa the perfect replacement for Falcao

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stressed his belief that David Villa is a natural replacement for Radamel Falcao.

Atletico look set to secure the services of Villa after agreeing a deal worth €5.1 million with Barcelona on Monday.

The Spanish capital club sold Falcao to Monaco in May for a fee believed to be in the region of €60m.

Falcao scored 70 goals in 92 games in his time at Estadio Vicente Calderon, but Cerezo is confident that 31-year-old Villa will be able to fill the void left by the Colombian.

“Villa has many seasons of football left. He is a born goalscorer,” Cerezo was quoted as saying by Radio Nacional de Espana.

“Villa will hope for everything because it is important to be selected for Spain (ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup). We expect him to target a lot of goals.

“The price we have paid is the lowest possible. We are particularly pleased.

“We have beaten many Spanish and foreign teams to Villa. It is important business that we have done. Villa is a player we have wanted for a long time, and that is why it is a great satisfaction.

“We are happy. I think the fans are going crazy because they thought he was going to go to an important English team.

“It is not easy (to replicate the goals of Falcao), but (Villa) can compensate very well.”
