Champions League final goes to penalties (SN)

The 1999 Champions League winners Manchester United were level with fellow Premiership side Chelsea at 1-1 after extra-time of the Champions League final here on Wednesday taking the match to penalties.

United's Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 26th minute but Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard equalised on the stroke of half-time. The match ended 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, likely to have been making his last appearance for the side, was redcarded towards the end of the second-half of extra-time after he tapped Nemanja Vidic on the face during a fracas between the two sides.
