Championship wrap: Cardiff go 10 points clear

Table-toppers Cardiff City extended their unbeaten streak in the Championship to seven matches with a 1-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday.

The Welsh side kicked 10 points clear of second-placed Leicester City with the gutsy away win, which came thanks to a debut goal from substitute Fraizer Campbell.

Leeds had the better of a scrappy first half, with Everton loanee Ross Barkley wasting a chance to give the Whites the lead when he shot straight at Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall.

Cardiff claimed the lead against the run of play on 63 minutes when a shocking Sam Byram clearance fell to Craig Bellamy, who fired a shot that was diverted into the back of the net by Campbell just moments after being introduced.

Marshall made a terrific save to deny Leeds defender Tom Lees in the second half but the hosts were made to pay for their lack of cutting edge in attack as Neil Warnock’s side saw a six-match winning streak at home in the Championship come to an end.

Third-placed Hull City won for the first time in four Championship fixtures with a 1-0 success at Millwall.

Irish midfielder David Meyler scored the game’s only goal in the first minute at the New Den.

Also in the top six, Watford and Crystal Palace registered victories, winning 2-1 at home against Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic respectively.

Czech striker Matej Vydra netted his seventh goal in five games for Watford and joined Almen Abdi on the scoresheet for Gianfranco Zola’s side while Glenn Murray’s late double fired Palace to victory.

At the other end of the table, Peterborough United remain bottom despite a 2-2 home draw against Burnley.

Substitute Martin Paterson scored with just five minutes left to give the seventh-placed Burnley a valuable point.

Bristol City are just one point above Peterborough though after they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers, courtesy of a Jordan Rhodes double, while Barnsley’s resurgence continued with a 2-1 win at a 10-man Blackpool.

Jason Scotland bagged an 88th minute winner for Barnsley, with the strike his second in as many games since moving on a free transfer from Ipswich Town.

Other results saw Sheffield Wednesday upset a 10-man Brighton and Hove Albion with a 3-1 home win while Chris Burke netted both goals in Birmingham City’s 2-1 triumph over Nottingham Forest.

Ipswich Town thrashed sixth-placed Middlesbrough 4-0 at Portman Road and Derby County eased to a 3-0 home success against Huddersfield Town.
