Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins says Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger lack respect for the Carling Cup.

Wenger has chosen his youngsters to play their Carling Cup games in recent years something Wilkins says ‘undermines the value of the competition’.

Wilkins said: “It’s all about winning trophies when you’re a big club.

“The fact we’ve won the Carling Cup twice in the last four years and Arsenal have won none justifies our policy,

“You enter a competition to win the competition. Why go into it if you’re not concerned whether you win it?

“Playing a young or weakened team undermines the value of the competition.

“And we have not and will not do that. We want to win it, big time.”

Ray Wilkins needs to keep his own counsel and keep his mouth tightly shut. The Arsenal have never disrespected the Carling Cup and always enter the competition to win - whats the point of putting out a team otherwise!

I`m a Chelsea fan and have too say that I`m really impressed with the Arsenal youth academy. I would like too see more chelse youngsters especially in the mickey mouse cup!!

  3. Warri Gooner on November 12th, 2008 15:22

Mr. Wilkins is simply jealous, especially as Chelsea do not have a youth team that can compete effectively. For Arsene, this is a developmental competition and it has bode well for his style, principles and the club over the years. If Ray Wilkins had boys of similar quality, he would give them a shot at proving themselves. He neither has them nor the confidence to field what mediocre youth players he has. Simple as that.

That is what we call cheap talk from an empty mind. l could pay my lifetime savings to watch the young guns rather than watch chelski score fluke goals. i regret supporting you in CL.moron mind your own bald business ok?

  6. TA6 on November 12th, 2008 16:06

I hope i m not being biased. but i think Arsenal young guns is one drawing point for ppl to follow the Carling Cup. not only they are young, they play good football as well. Let’s face it, all around the top flight clubs who really cares about the Carling Cup? Not even Wigan filled their strongest lineup.

if there’s anyone to blame, blame the creation of Premiership, since then it’s all about $$ in this game. What era Ray Wilkins is living in?

  7. Fares on November 12th, 2008 16:07

Arsenal has gone to the Final and semi final of this cup with the youth so I dont see how it is disrespecting. I think it is MORE DISRESPECTING to send the starting 11 and lose against a D1 or D2 teams because first teamers are not interested to play against players who makes their weekly salary in a year.
Arsenal last night, sent exciting talents and I enjoyed the game more than most of the EPL games.

If Arsenal goes there and gets hammered in the first round then, as an Arsenal fan I would get mad.

Err…we are trying to win the competition. We’ve reached the semi-finals three years running and the final one of those times where we were unlucky to lose to Chelski’s full strength team. If we weren’t trying to win it we wouldn’t even bother entering it. Just because Arsenal don’t have unlimited funds to buy two teams’ worth of players, doesn’t mean we have to play the same 11 every game, they’d be knackered by now. As it is, we use the CC as an educational tool for the younger players, it gives them the opportunity to play against Premiership opposition in competitive matches so that they can slot into the first team more easily. Sorry Ray, looks like you’re a cunt :D

  9. Naz on November 12th, 2008 16:41

Was Wilkins even around for the last two wins of the cup?

  10. Paul Troyah on November 12th, 2008 17:29

To all commentators, the game is not about favourtism. please analyse the game accordingly and stop using ugly languages against teams, coaches or players onlt because you love one of them. How can you enter a competition with the mind of winning it and yet still use a team that you know can not win it? It really shows no respect. let’s come on Arsenal fans, Wilkins is 1000% right.

  11. Joseph on November 12th, 2008 17:31

truly arsenal lack respect for d cup they only want to win d bigger ones like p.l. And c.l. Which is not possible when chelsea is there

  12. Kelz on November 12th, 2008 19:47

people who luv good football will always want to watch arsenal youth team play. chelsea has wanted to play good football like arsenal by sacking there coaches in recent time but all they do on pitch is score fluke goals. i bet u Ray Wilkins chelsea better crash out of the carlin cup before they face arsenal otherwise this will be there biggest shame ever. THEY WONT HAVE RESPECT FOR YOUR TEAM TOO.

  13. mooqs on November 12th, 2008 20:24

i really dont understand some people in this world arsene disrespect a trophy when he is in need for 1 is just abosouloutely rubbish that he disrespects the carling cup i agree with sue, and plus arsene wants the youngsters to get 1st team and quality experiences by bringing them in to the real game quickly thats why his starting with the carling cup all i can say is all these bloody hating fools that are criticising us need to go sleep and shoosh…i dont see chelsea or any other team bringing out youngsters and giving them hopes of becoming world class players and thats what arsene wenger is doing now and for years that have past. the only team that i see who are starting to that is manchester united as you have seen yourself so is arsene wenger is disrespecting the carling cup then why is sir alex ferguson doing the same and he is much older than arsene wenger. haters need to keep their mouth shut ASAP PERMANENTLY!!!

  14. GoonerVivek on November 13th, 2008 1:07

Ray’s spot on! They want to win it badly and have tremendous respect to the cup. I guess that’s why they lost.

  15. Ilhamudeen on November 13th, 2008 4:18

Cheksi r so jeasouly n mr wilk nis not even now how to make team to perfect win n u have no way to command abt other teams don’t give any stupid example pls shut up ur ugly mouth arsenal will fire on aganist chelksi’s game

  16. Luciano on November 13th, 2008 5:51

Burnley gave the perfect answer to Wilkin’s obvious jea-lousy tonight. Now he should shut up and watch smarter teams play STRATEGICALLY!

  17. Ismaila on November 13th, 2008 8:28

I like chelsea but why chelsea loes

  18. Warri Gooner on November 13th, 2008 9:05

I wonder what Mr. Wilkins has to say now about Burnley.

  19. Adz on November 13th, 2008 18:02

“How can you enter a competition with the mind of winning it and yet still use a team that you know can not win it? It really shows no respect. let’s come on Arsenal fans, Wilkins is 1000% right.”

Who knows the arsenal kids cant win it? Much better performance against a much better team than Chelsea had.

With Liverpool folding the only real “competition” is Spurs, no doubt they will field their strongest 11 if Arsenal happen to draw them, cant see anything like a 5-1 this time round though.

  20. Kids Soccer on November 15th, 2008 3:23

Just because Mr Arsenal plays his youngsters during this cup doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t want to win it. Giving youngsters a chance to prove their skills will inevitably lead to tommorrows superstars.

  21. Sayee Victor on November 19th, 2008 16:00

Hw i wish dat empty headed wilkins read dis cos he blatantly xpresses his jealousy n insultin others,bt my advice 4 him is dat he should abstain 4rm selfishness n allow young talented players 2 demonstrate deir talent nd next time he ulter such statement he should prepare 4 his sack letter lyk his fore-coaches

  22. Obeteze osinachi francis on November 29th, 2008 18:16

If liverpool could survive winning the league cup then i will survive playing together with them by summer next season.obeteze osinachi a footballer from nigeria.
