About half an hour into the Liga MX final second leg, Chivas announced the sacking of Johan Cruyff.
The Dutch legend, largely credited with establishing the Barcelona model, had served as an advisor since February. Cruyff claimed when he was hired that he had a three-year contract.
Under the former Barca player and coach, Chivas hired fellow Dutchman John van ‘t Schip and installed a natural grass field. The Goats finished eighth in Liga MX, crashing out in the first round of the playoffs, and didn’t make it out of the group stages of the CONCACAF Champions League.
“The coaching staff will not be changed,” Chivas said in a statement.
In November, Chivas owner Jorge Vergara said Cruyff would assist in the coaching search for MLS club Chivas USA. In the same press conference, he estimated that an announcement would come within 10 days. Nearly a month later, Chivas USA still does not have a coach.
Chivas Guadalajara has the most titles in Mexico with 11.
