Papiss Cisse has been omitted from Newcastle United’s 23-man squad for their pre-season tour of Portugal.
The club head to Braga where they will undergo a training camp as well as two friendlies against Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira on Saturday and Tuesday.
Cisse has previously said he is unhappy with the club’s sponsorship deal with Wonga, a payday loans company based in the United Kingdom.
Their association with the club requires all players to wear training gear and match day shirts with the company logo.
But Cisse, who is a Muslim, says to do so would be against his religious beliefs, leading to a stand-off with the club.
The 28-year-old has offered to wear a shirt without the logo or one bearing the name of a charity, but Newcastle have thus far rejected that approach.
