City to appeal Kompany red card

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says the club will appeal Vincent Kompany’s red card against Arsenal.

The City captain was shown a straight red for a two-footed lunge on Jack Wilshere after referee Mike Dean had earlier dismissed Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny for a foul on Edin Dzeko.

The English Premier League champions ran out comfortable 2-0 winners but the result was tarnished by Kompany’s dismissal, and Mancini confirmed they will be asking the FA to overturn the suspension.

“This is not a red card, absolutely not,” he told Sky Sports.

“He has one foot to take the ball, the other is left. I think that the referee made a mistake there.

“It was not a sending off for Vinnie because Vinnie took the ball with only one foot after anticipating the opponent.”

Mancini said the red card to Koscielny, who hauled down Dzeko in the penalty area, made things easier for his side, but was disappointed they were unable to extend their lead after the break.

“If you play with 10 players it is very difficult,” he said.

“But we started the game very well. We played high, pressed high. After the sending off it was easier.

“Second half we were too soft and we missed three or four goals and after the game can be open.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he had yet to see a replay of the Koscielny incident, but was disappointed with the way his team conceded their two goals.

“It was frustrating (to go down to 10 men) but we got away with it (with the penalty miss),” he said.

“We were down to 10 men with 80 minutes to go and knew it would be a difficult game.

“But we were too timid and did not have enough authority on the game. We let them dictate the game to us and when we went 1-0 down it was difficult.”

Of Koscielny’s sending off, Wenger said: “I’ve not seen it. I was surprised but I have heard it was a penalty. We have to live with the decision but it doesn’t mean we have to lose the game.

“We gave away two cheap goals. At 10 men you keep it 0-0 and you never know.”

Wenger said midfielder Mikel Arteta was expected to miss about three weeks with a calf injury.
