West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has been charged for making inappropriate comments on social networking website Twitter.

Cole, who has more than 37,000 followers on the website, has been charged by the Football Association with improper conduct relating to comments he tweeted during a friendly between England and Ghana on March 29.

“Immigration has surrounded the Wembley premises! I knew it was a trap! Hahahaha,” Cole tweeted, referring to the large number of expatriate Ghanaians at the stadium to watch the match.

“The only way to get out safely is to wear an England jersey and paint your face w/ the St. George?s flag!”

Cole claimed the comments were a joke and later deleted them from his profile.

He has until 4pm GMT on April 13 to respond to the charge.
