Seamus Coleman spoke of his disappointment after the Republic of Ireland were knocked out of Euro 2016 following a 2-1 defeat to hosts France.

Martin O’Neill’s side qualified for the knockout rounds thanks to a late winner from Robbie Brady against Italy, and the same man gave them the lead from the penalty spot after two minutes in Lyon.

A quick fire second-half double from Antoine Griezmann handed France victory, but Coleman felt Ireland could have got more from the game.

“We are disappointed. We felt it was there for us and we gave our all,” the Everton defender told ITV.

“It shows how well we have done that we are disappointed getting beat. We wanted to go further for the fans but we hope we made people proud.

“The fans here and at home are amazing. It is a special bond between the fans and the players.”

Coleman captained the Irish as they impressed against both Italy and France, but they could not hold on in the second half on Sunday – Shane Duffy’s 66th minute red card adding to a disappointing day.

“We took a lot of belief from the Italy game,” he added. “The second half was always going to be tough but we couldn’t keep the first half performance going.”
