James Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game to lift Colombia to a 1-0 victory over Peru in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying on Sunday.

The highly-rated Porto winger was on target just after half-time at Estadio Nacional in Lima to give Argentine coach Jose Pekerman three points in his first official game in charge.

The 20-year-old Manchester United target capitalised on a defensive error to net from close range in the 52nd minute.

The win moves Colombia to seven points from four games with Argentina leading the group on 10 points.

Chile are second with nine points, 2011 Copa America winners Uruguay are on eight points along with Venezuela.

The visiting Colombia were always a threat with the likes of Radamel Falcao and Fredy Guarin dangerous, but they needed Rodriguez’s goal after a Peru error to clinch three points.
