Ecuador moved into second place in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Tuesday.
With leaders Argentina held to a 1-1 draw in Bolivia earlier in the day, Ecuador leapfrogged Colombia into second place with their big win.
But they were behind early at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa in Quito when Luis Caballero netted for the Paraguayans in the 15th minute.
Felipe Caicedo restored parity seven minutes before the interval, and after the break it was all Ecuador.
Jefferson Montero made it 2-1 five minutes into the second half, and Cristian Benitez doubled the advantage four minutes later.
Montero’s second goal 15 minutes from the end saw Ecuador take a comfortable win over the bottom side, and pulled them within four points of Argentina.
Colombia relinquished second spot when they lost 1-0 to Venezuela, with a goal from Jose Salomon Rondon the difference between the sides.
Chile climbed to fourth spot thanks to their 2-0 win over Uruguay in Santiago.
Esteban Paredes scored 10 minutes in, and Eduardo Vargas doubled their lead 12 minutes from the end.
Chile are in fourth place ahead of Venezuela, with both sides on 15 points, while Uruguay are two points behind in sixth place.
