Real Madrid advanced to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 1-0 derby win over Atletico Madrid at Estadio Vicente Calderon.

The Spanish giants took a 3-1 lead into the second leg of the quarter-final tie against their city rivals, but Atletico had a vital away goal up their sleeve from the opening leg at the Bernabeu.

Diego Forlan’s strike in the first leg meant a 2-0 triumph by the hosts would have been enough to see them through to the final four.

But star midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo put to rest any hopes Atletico had of staying in the Spanish cup competition, when he netted in the 23rd minute on Thursday, cancelling out Atletico’s away goal and booking Real a two-leg semi-final meeting with Sevilla.
