Atletico Madrid were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by second-tier outfit Albacete on Thursday.
Gregorio Manzano’s side – who sit eighth in La Liga – entered the match on the back of wins against Celtic and Rayo Vallecano and were high on confidence.
But Albacete, who are enjoying an impressive season and lie sixth in the second division, gave their more-fancied opponents a surprise with their 2-1 win.
Atletico defender Dominguez gave away a penalty on the half-hour mark and Calle converted to send the home fans at Estadio Carlos Belmonte wild.
Albacete were reduced to 10 men just after half-time when Nunez was given his marching orders, but Adrian missed a chance to equalise from the penalty spot for the visitors.
Atletico’s numerical advantage did not last long with Dominguez given his second yellow card after an hour leaving both sides with 10 men.
Zurdo then doubled Albacete’s lead on 62 minutes and although Adrian made up for his penalty miss with a goal of his own with 20 minutes left, Manzano’s men could not make up the deficit.
The other match on Thursday saw Athletic Bilbao defeat Real Oviedo 1-0, thanks to De Marcos’ 11th minute strike.
