Agustin Allione scored a crucial goal as Velez Sarsfield knocked off Newell’s Old Boys 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

The Argentine midfielder smashed home the only goal of the game just after the hour mark to give Velez a big advantage ahead of the second leg on May 14.

In the all-Argentine battle, Velez, who sit 13 spots below second-placed Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina’s Primera Division, claimed a vital victory and notched an away goal when Allione received Federico Insua’s pass, stepped inside his marker and thrashed the ball home.

While Velez right-back Fabian Cubero was sent off in the 84th minute for a second bookable offence, the visitors held on at the Estadio Marcelo Alberta Bielsa.
