Copa Libertadores wrap: Emelec strike early blow

Emelec got their Copa Libertadores campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Olimpia on Thursday.

Enner Valencia went on a solo run before crossing into the box where Luciano Figueroa was brought down by Francisco Najera.

Figueroa made no mistake from the penalty spot, calmly slotting the ball in the 51st minute past Olimpia keeper Martin Silva in the Olimpia goal.

Internacional beat Juan Aurich 2-0 with Oscar putting them ahead in the 24th minute. Midfielder Jesus Datolo made sure of the points in injury time.

Universidad Catolica drew 1-1 with Bolivar. Uruguay striker William Martinez gave Bolivar the lead in the 38th minute before Paraguay’s Roberto Maldonado equalised a minute before half-time.

Bolivar midfielder Walter Condarco was sent off for a second bookable offence 19 minutes from time.

Libertad crushed Alianza Lima 4-1 at home after the visitors took a 28th-minute lead through midfielder Joazhino Arroe.

But second-half goals from Luciano Civelli in the 47th minute, a Sergio Aquino penalty in the 67th minute and a third from Mauro Caballero 11 minutes from time sealed the points for Libertad.

An own goal by Lima defender Walter Ibanez in injury time completed the scoring.
