Catania needed extra time to overcome nine-man Serie B outfit Cittadella in the Coppa Italia fourth round on Tuesday.
Gonzalo Bergessio equalised late on for the hosts at Stadio Angelo Massimino before the striker and Francesco Lodi helped Catania scrape through in extra time.
Cittadella squandered a chance to go ahead in the 28th minute when Tommaso Bellazzini put a penalty wide.
But the visitors took a 41st-minute lead through Andrea Paolucci, who curled in a free-kick to give his side a shock lead.
Cittadella were reduced to nine men by the 68th minute, with both Massimiliano Busellato and Andrea De Vito sent off.
They held on bravely until two minutes before full-time, when substitute Bergessio struck from close range to force the encounter into extra time.
Tiring with nine men, Cittadella were unable to hold out as Lodi netted a free-kick and Bergessio headed in the sealer.
Catania will face fellow Serie A side Parma in the fifth round.
