Palermo ensured their passage through to the Coppa Italia fourth round after overcoming Serie B side Avellino 2-1.

The hosts took the lead through Luca Rigoni just after the restart at the Stadio Renzo Barbera, but former Fulham forward Marcello Trotta levelled for the visitors on the hour mark.

Parity did not last long, however, with Robin Quaison restoring Palermo’s lead two minutes later, and Giuseppe Iachini’s men were able to hold firm despite Avellino pressure.

Serie A outfit Empoli were dumped out as they succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat against Serie B team Vicenza.

Atalanta suffered no such shock, as they sailed to a 3-0 win over third-tier Cittadella thanks to three goals in 16 second-half minutes.

Sassuolo comfortably dispatched with Modena 2-0, while Luca Toni scored once again as Hellas Verona came from behind to see off Foggia 3-1 at home.

Alessandria got the better of Juve Stabia with a 1-0 triumph, Cagliari edged out Trapani 4-2 on penalties after normal and extra time finished 1-1, and Spezia edged Frosinone 6-5 on pens after 120 scoreless minutes.
