Cartagines have advanced to the final of the Torneo de Verano in Costa Rica’s Primera Division, knocking Deportivo Saprissa out on away goals.

While Sunday’s semi-final second leg at Cartagines’ Estadio Jose Rafael Fello Meza Ivankovich finished scoreless, the hosts triumphed 1-1 on aggregate due to Carlos Johnson’s goal at Deportivo Saprissa’s home ground on Thursday.

The triumph keeps Cartagines’ campaign for their first league title since 1940 alive, and they will face reigning champions Herediano in the final of Costa Rica’s summer tournament, after they triumphed 5-3 on aggregate over Perez Zeledon.

Herediano knocked off Perez Zeledon 1-0 on Saturday thanks to an own goal from Keilor Soto in the 34th minute.

The tournament decider against Cartagines will be Herediano’s second final this season after they lost the Torneo de Invierno (winter tournament) in December, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Alajuelense.
