Paris Saint-Germain have won their heavyweight fourth-round Coupe de la Ligue clash with Marseille, while Nice upset Lyon.
PSG advanced to the quarter-final stage of the competition courtesy of a comfortable 2-0 win at Parc des Princes.
Marseille’s cause was not done any favours when defender Rod Fanni was shown a red card just 27 minutes in.
And PSG made the most of their numerical advantage almost instantly when a minute later Thiago Silva converted a penalty.
The top-placed Ligue 1 side put the result beyond doubt five minutes after half-time when Jeremy Menez got his name on the scoresheet to book PSG a date with Saint-Etienne for a shot at a semi-final berth.
At the Municipal du Ray, Nice pulled off a surprise by downing their more-fancied opponents Lyon 3-1 in an action-packed affair.
All four goals were scored in the space of just eight minutes early in the first half in what was a frenetic period of play.
Valentin Eysseric opened the scoring for Nice from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, only to have his effort cancelled out a minute later by Bafetimbi Gomis.
But Nice only had to wait another two minutes to regain the ascendancy via Mahame El-Hadj Traore and by the 15-minute mark they incredibly led 3-1when Renato Civelli found the back of the net.
Unfortunately for fans who arrived to the match late, there would be no further goals and Lyon’s dirty night was capped off when Milan Bisevac was sent off two minutes before time.
In the day’s other result, 10-man Montpellier accounted for Bordeaux 1-0 and they will meet Nice in the next phase of the competition.
The match between Bastia and Auxerre was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Armand-Cesari-Furiani.
