Jonathan de Guzman was thrilled to have scored his first Premier League goal in Swansea’s ‘historic’ 2-1 victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Michael Laudrup’s men moved into the top half of the table after strikes from Michu and De Guzman were enough to see off the Magpies for the first time in 32 years, with the home side grabbing a late consolation goal through Demba Ba.

The 25-year-old found the back of the net after reacting quickest to a fumbled Danny Graham shot, squeezing his effort in from an acute angle.

After the game, he said that he was delighted to play a part in the victory.

“I’m very happy to get my first Premier League goal,” he told the club’s official website.

“I am happy to contribute to the team and get three points. I knew Danny would either finish it or I could get onto the rebound, so I ran through and squeezed it in.

“We did very well as a group. We created a lot of chances and we are very happy with the three points. It was an historic day for us – a first win over Newcastle for 32 years, and everyone is pushing each other on which is giving the gaffer a hard time to pick his starting XI.”

The Canada international declared his enjoyment at playing for the Welsh side, adding that he feels privileged to perform regularly in the Premier League.

“It’s an honour to play in the Premier League, and everyone is watching us with the way we play football,” he said.

“It’s a tough league so we need to keep our heads straight and stay on the path we have been on in the last few weeks, because it has paid off.”
