Debuchy completes Arsenal switch

Arsenal have completed the signing of Newcastle United right-back Mathieu Debuchy on a long-term deal.

The France international moves to the Emirates Stadium to replace countryman Bacary Sagna, who moved to Manchester City upon the expiration of his contract in June.

Debuchy joined Newcastle from Lille in January 2013 and made 46 appearances for the St James’ Park club, scoring once.

He has firmly established himself as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back at international level and featured in four of France’s five fixtures at the recent World Cup.

The chance to play in the UEFA Champions League again was a major factor in Debuchy’s decision to head to London.

“I’m very proud to be joining a great club like Arsenal and to wear its colours, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the whole world,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with Arsene Wenger and to helping the team build on last season’s FA Cup success.

“Playing again in the Champions League is a big excitement for me and I will do my best to help Arsenal compete for trophies.”

Manager Arsene Wenger has no doubts that the 28-year-old will settle quickly at the Emirates Stadium.

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal,” said the Frenchman.

“He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France.

“He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us.”

Debuchy is Arsenal’s second close-season signing following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona last week.
