Debuchy: Premier League is difficult

SoccerNews in English Premier League 23 May 2013

Newcastle defender Mathieu Debuchy has admitted his introduction to English football has been “difficult”.

The Frenchman joined from Lille in January, but saw his team-mates struggle in the Premier League before eventually securing their top-flight status with just one game to go.

While Alan Pardew’s side enjoyed a UEFA Europa League run to the quarter-finals, Debuchy admits the season has been hard for the club, but insists he is relishing the challenge of improving.
“The Premier League is a very difficult league to play in, but by the same token it’s an interesting one as well,” the France international told The Chronicle.

“Why is the league difficult? It’s because every match is difficult and I do mean every single one.

“You have some of the best players in the world in England right now, so the level in all games is of a really high standard.

“That is a challenge for me, but it’s a challenge I wanted when I decided to join Newcastle United in the first place.”
Despite the problems Newcastle have encountered, Debuchy maintains he has been happy with his time at St James’ Park so far.

“I have really enjoyed the first four, five or whatever months I’ve had here,” he continued. “It’s gone really well for me on and off the park.
“I thought Sunday (against Arsenal) was a decent performance to end the season with. We did OK and it’s just a pity we conceded the goal when we did.”

Both Debuchy and fellow Newcastle player Yohan Cabaye have been selected in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay in June.
