Delph confirms Aston Villa stay

Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph has scotched rumours linking him with an imminent move to Manchester City, confirming he will be not be leaving during the transfer window.

A statement from Delph on Villa’s official website read: “I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight.

“I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”

The midfielder was an integral part of the Villa side that reached last season’s FA Cup final and staved off Premier League relegation under Tim Sherwood – who took over as manager in February.

Delph’s impressive performances for the Midlands club had led to intense speculation that he was to complete a switch to the Etihad Stadium, with new Villa signing Micah Richards confirming the former Leeds United player had asked him for his thoughts about Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Richards transferred to Villa after being frozen out at City, while other young English players at City, such as Scott Sinclair – who also left the Etihad Stadium to join Villa – have moved on due to a lack of significant playing time.

And Delph appears to have decided not to follow in their footsteps, instead deciding to focus on turning around the fortunes of a Villa side that has finished in the bottom six in each of the last four seasons.
