Sheffield United pushed bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday closer to relegation from the Championship after securing a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough on Sunday.
Wednesday needed a victory in the 125th Steel City derby to climb out of the relegation at the expense of Crystal Palace, but United midfielder Lee Williamson’s second half equaliser forced the Owls to settle for a share of the spoils.
Alan Irvine’s struggling team had taken the lead in the 41st minute when Darren Potter netted with brilliant volley.
But Williamson curled a 60th minute free-kick straight into the top corner to ensure the majority of the 35,485 crowd went home disappointed.
Third bottom Wednesday are now one point from safety with just two games remaining to preserve their place in English football’s second tier.
