Injured Ilkay Gundogan poked fun at Manchester City’s tribute to him before their 2-1 beating of Arsenal, reminding his team-mates that he is “still alive”.

The Germany international has had rotten luck with injuries over the past couple of years and was ruled out for the long term with knee ligament damage sustained in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Watford.

In response to his injury, City opted take to the Etihad Stadium pitch before the win over Arsenal with every member of the team wearing a specially-made shirt bearing Gundogan’s name.

Although the gesture highlighted a strong bond between Gundogan and his City team-mates, the tribute was met with widespread ridicule on social media, with some questioning the bizarre decision to don the jerseys the wrong way round, while others simply suggested it was over-the-top.

And Gundogan seemingly agreed, cheekily joining in with the mocking as he wrote on Twitter: “Thanks to my team-mates & of course – congrats to my boys to [sic] this crucial win against #AFC.

“PS: Don’t worry – I’m still alive.”
