El Clasico: How it unfolded on Twitter

Real Madrid earned the bragging rights over rivals Barcelona in a dramatic 2-1 Clasico victory, with Cristiano Ronaldo proving the match-winner at Camp Nou to end the hosts’ record-breaking 39-match unbeaten run.

After a lacklustre first half, the match burst into life when Gerard Pique headed the Liga leaders ahead, but Karim Benzema’s acrobatic effort and Ronaldo’s late winner – either side of Sergio Ramos’ red card – secured a memorable Madrid comeback.

Here we take a look at how Twitter reacted throughout an action-packed Clasico.

Former Portugal star and one-time FIFA presidential hopeful Luis Figo nailed his colours to the mast before kick-off, while Barcelona paid an emotional tribute to legend Johan Cruyff, who died last month after a battle with cancer.

Sergio Ramos did not finish the match and the Spain defender was perhaps also lucky not to have given away a penalty for a foul on Lionel Messi in the first half. Spanish journalist Guillem Balague certainly thought so.

There was little to talk about during the first half, but La Liga showed its global appeal. Joey Barton took a liking to Zinedine Zidane’s attire, while former Barca star Patrick Kluivert predicted good things to come in the second half.
