Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy will miss Italy’s friendly with San Marino in Bolgona on Friday.

El Shaarawy suffered an ankle injury in training and boss Cesare Prandelli will not risk him for the friendly, instead choosing to keep him as fit as possible for the World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic a week later.

The team’s chief medical officer, Enrico Castellacci, said he hoped resting El Shaarawy for the friendly would ensure he was fit for the qualifier in Prague on June 7.

“As expected tests did not show any major problems so we hope for a speedy recovery,” Castellacci said.

“We will decide together on when to reintegrate him back in the squad because we have some very important objectives. The goal is a full recovery for the match in Prague.”

El Shaarawy’s Milan and Italy team-mate Mario Balotelli is expected to shrug off a muscle strain in his back to play in the San Marino friendly.

Italy are currently top of Group B in the European section of World Cup qualifying, having won four of their five games so far, drawing the other.
