England captain Steven Gerrard says that the whole squad are keen to help stricken former international Paul Gascoigne.

The 45-year-old has long battled against mental health issues and addiction but, according to his agent, Terry Baker, recently suffered a relapse.

And, ahead of Wednesday’s friendly clash with Brazil, the England figureheads spoke of the players’ desire to do their utmost to support Gascoigne.

“The players have made it clear to the FA we want to help,” Gerrard told reporters at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

Hodgson insisted that ‘kind words’ will not help the Tyneside-born, ex-Tottenham midfielder before adding: “He needs severe action.”
