Heerenveen overturned a two-goal deficit to hold Ajax to a 3-3 draw in an exhilarating encounter at the Abe Lenstra Stadion on Friday.
Niklas Moisander and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson had put Ajax into a commanding position inside 20 minutes, but an Alfred Finnbogason double and a Magnus Eikrem strike put Heerenveen ahead by half-time.
But Frank de Boer’s side left with a share of the spoils courtesy of Christian Eriksen’s effort, to spare the away side’s blushes.
It was a great start for the Ajax who stormed into a 2-0 lead after just 17 minutes.
First Moisander did well to head home at the back post from Eriksen’s deep cross, before the Dane once again provided the assist for Sigthorsson to nod a corner past Kristoffer Nordfeldt.
But the reigning champions were stunned by a Heerenveen comeback before half-time.
Finnbogason sprung the offside trap to latch onto Hakim Ziyech’s through-ball and fire past Kenneth Vermeer, before the same combination brought the equaliser when the Icelander latched onto the Ziyech’s lofted pass and coolly slotted under the goalkeeper.
The turnaround was complete shortly before half-time when Eikrem curled in an effort from the edge of the box.
But Ajax showed their own fighting spirit when Eriksen completed a fine individual performance with a well-placed finish from 25-yards in the 66th minute.
The draw leaves the sides neck and neck with Ajax in fourth just a place ahead of the hosts on goal difference.
