Twente blew the chance to reclaim top spot in the Eredivisie on Friday after suffering a shock 3-2 loss at home to Heracles.
Steve McLaren’s side had slipped three points behind rivals PSV and AZ Alkmaar on the table, but could have returned to the summit with a win at De Grolsch Veste.
Signs were bad early as Brazilian attacker Everton gave Heracles the lead just after the half hour mark.
Star striker Luuk de Jong netted his 15th goal of the campaign on 73 minutes to draw the home side level, but Darl Douglas responded just eight minutes later to put Heracles back in front.
Everton scored his second three minutes later to put Heracles two goals up, and although de Jong netted a second deep into injury time, it was too late to salvage anything for Twente.
Twente remain in third place on 39 points, three behind PSV and AZ, while Heracles move within sight of a Europa League berth.
