Eredivisie wrap: Feyenoord title hopes take a hit

Feyenoord’s hopes of winning their first Eredivisie title in 13 seasons took a hit after they were surprisingly beaten 2-0 at Heerenveen.

The last time Feyenoord lifted the Dutch league title was back in 1999, when they finished 15 points clear of Willem II.

And Feyenoord went into Saturday’s clash one point adrift of top spot and on track to mount a serious title challenge but they could well end the weekend four points off the pace following Alfred Finnbogason and Yassine El Ghanassy’s late display.

With the match petering out for a scoreless draw, Finnbogason and El Ghanassy both found the back of the net inside the final five minutes.

The result leaves Feyenoord in third, although Vitesse are two points behind and scheduled to play on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, FC Utrecht heaped more misery on relegation candidates VVV Venlo with a 2-1 win, Groningen came from behind to upstage hosts Willem 2-1, while Twente and NAC Breda played out a 1-1 draw.
