Defending champions Ajax moved five points clear at the top of the Eredivisie table after overcoming title rivals PSV 3-2 on Sunday.

Ajax went into the match with a three-point advantage at the summit and they extended their lead courtesy of substitute Derk Boerrigter’s 77th-minute winner.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson put Ajax ahead on 33 minutes but Jeremain Lens levelled proceedings two minutes before the half-time interval.

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, who has been heavily linked with Premier League outfit Liverpool in recent weeks, restored the visitors lead seven minutes into the second-half.

PSV refused to give up and eventually got themselves back on level terms thanks to Lens, who netted his second goal of the game with 20 minutes left to play.

Ajax, however, were not to be denied maximum points as Boerrigter found the back of the net, 13 minutes from time.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Feyenoord’s title hopes were dealt a major blow after they drew 1-1 at RKC Waalwijk.

Ronald Koeman’s men made the perfect start to the match, when Graziano Pelle converted a 13th-minute penalty, his 23rd goal of the season.

Waalwijk introduced their top scorer Teddy Chevalier at half-time, and that seemed to give the hosts a renewed purpose as Sander Duits finished off an excellent solo run to equalise.

Feyenoord drove forward in search of regaining their lead, but they had to settle for a share of the spoils and fourth position, six points adrift of Ajax.

In other results on Sunday, American striker Jozy Altidore bagged a first-half hat-trick as strugglers AZ Alkmaar thrashed sixth-placed Utrecht 6-0, while Heerenveen secured a 3-2 win over Willem II.
