Twente missed out on the chance to go three points clear at the top of the Eredivisie as they were held 1-1 at home by third-placed Ajax.

Luc Castaignos put the hosts in front midway through the first half but they were pegged back by Kolbeinn Sigthorsson nine minutes from time.

The result extended Twente’s unbeaten league run to six matches, but they can now be overtaken at the summit if PSV Eindhoven win at Groningen on Sunday.

Elsewhere at the top, fifth-placed Vitesse went level on points with Feyenoord after coming from two down to seal a last gasp 3-2 success away at Heerenveen.

Alfred Finnbogason put the hosts in front two minutes before the break before Kenny Otigba made it two at the start of the second half.

Lucas Piazon pulled a goal back for Vitesse in the 54th minute, before scoring his second 18 minutes later.

The game looked destined for a draw until Patrick van Aanholt scored right at the end as Vitesse bounced back from two consecutive league defeats.

They moved level with Feyenoord on 17 points after Ronald Koeman’s side were held to a 2-2 draw away at Go Ahead Eagles.

Stefan de Vrij put Feyenoord in front after 17 minutes before Mawouna Amevor levelled the scores three minutes after the break.

Lex Immers put the away side ahead for a second time on 63 minutes and they looked set for a fourth successive victory until Marnix Kolder’s 89th-minute equaliser.

Second from bottom RKC Waalwijk’s woes continued as they fell to their sixth straight league defeat, going down 2-1 at home to Roda JC.

Rmy Amieux had given the home side the advantage two minutes into the second half but Roda were level just six minutes later thanks to Krisztian Nemeth’s goal.

Substitute Frank Demouge then scored the winner six minutes from time before Frank van Mosselveld completed a miserable day for the hosts by being sent for a second bookable offence right at the end.

Elsewhere, Utrecht claimed their first league win in four thanks to a 4-2 home triumph over NAC Breda.

Yassine Ayoub opened the scoring for Utrecht in the 16th minute but Danny Verbeek levelled matters 20 minutes later.

Jens Toornstra gave the hosts the lead for a second time in the 63rd minute before a Jacob Mulenga strike on 81 minutes and another Toornstra goal two minutes later put the result beyond doubt.

Anouar Hadouir did pull one back for the visitors, but it was never likely to be enough for a Breda side who fell to their first defeat in six Eredivisie games.
