Etherington praises Pulis´ work at Stoke

Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington believes Tony Pulis can be proud of the work he has done at the club.

Pulis left the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday following a seven-year stint and Etherington praised the Welshman for guiding the club to the Premier League and then consolidating.

“If you look at where Stoke were when he irst came in – mid-table in the Championship – you can’t argue he’s done a fantastic job,” Etherington told talkSPORT.

“He’s a great man, a fantastic man. He’s done a lot for me personally, a lot for the football club and for the people of Stoke-on-Trent as well.”

Some supporters of the club had become keen for a change after their side could only finish 13th in the Premier League, despite investing in proven top-flight players at the start of the campaign.
However, Etherington warned fans that the decision to remove Pulis from his position could prove dangerous.
“Fans were grumbling saying they wanted him out or wanted a change but it looks like they have got their wish,” he continued.

“You have to be careful what you wish for in football sometimes. You look at Charlton under Alan Curbishley and look where they are now (back in the Championship having dropped into League One from being a Premier League team).

“Hopefully it won’t go that way for us, hopefully we’ll get someone in who will push us on and make us into a top-10 team.
“We will wait and see who the club decide to bring in. The chairman is a very sensible man, very level-headed and knows his football and he will definitely bring in the right person for Stoke.”

During his second spell as Stoke manager, Pulis kept Stoke in the Premier League for five consecutive seasons, finishing as high as 11th in the 2009-10 season.
