Group A is by no means the strongest one at the Euro 2016 finals, but seeing that it contains hosts France, star-studded Switzerland side, tough to beat Romania and debutants Albania, it could prove to be quite interesting.
Even if the Rossocrociati are seen as one of the dark horses, we cannot look past France with regards to the team most likely to finish in first position as this is clearly one of their best sides in the 21st century.
Les Bleus squad is packed with talent, drive and experience, with the likes of Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann just first among equals. The team looked quite impressive in the March friendlies and with all key men in very good form, they are not only the favourites to win Group A, but also to win another major trophy on home soil.
Realistically, the only side that can stop France from winning the first place in the group is Switzerland, a team that have been on a constant uptrend over the last few years and the one that impressed at the 2014 World Cup finals.
The Rossocrociati have got plenty of individual quality and they work well as a team, although they are not in the best possible form and are bound to miss first choice striker Josip Drmic, who is out through injury.
Everything suggests that Romania and Albania will be vying for the third place that may or may not secure progress to the Last 16 stage, and these are the teams that have done well at the back, but clearly lack the quality up front to match the likes of France and Switzerland.
And while Anghel Iordanescu’s charges appear to be superior in quality, Albania boast a better team spirit and play with a lot more passion, although seeing as they lack experience of playing at this level, Gianni De Biasi’s men may not be able to avoid finishing bottom of the group.
