Another winner from Pedrito

  • La Liga
  • Not much change at the top of the league in Spain as Barcelona and Real Madrid both won. The gap between them and the rest increased though as fourth placed Sevilla beat third placed Valencia.

Leaders Barcelona won 1-0 at Sporting Gijon with a first half Pedrito strike. Real Madrid had an impressive 3-1 win at Deportivo. Granero opened the scoring for Real and Benzema added two more.

In a feisty game at Sevilla the two sides with the best claim to being the third best side in Spain met. The home side went 2-0 up with Negredo scoring both goals and Valencia could only manage a last minute consolation from Navarro.

The reason Sevilla moved up to fourth place was because Mallorca suffered a shock 2-1 reverse at Xerez. This was only the bottom club’s second win of the season.

  • Serie A
  • AC Milan somewhat wasted their game in hand on leaders Inter by only managing a 1-1 draw at home to Livorno, leaving them eight points behind their great rivals. Ambrosini gave them a first half lead but the sixteenth placed side came back in the second half to take a share of the spoils.

Meanwhile, Roma moved level on points with AC Milan after they beat bottom club Siena 2-1 with goals from Riise and Okaka Chuka.

  • Bundesliga
  • Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten and in the top spot after goals from Kiessling, Derdiyok and Hyypia, gave them a 3-1 win over SC Freiburg.

Two points further back are the ominously improving Bayern Munich who beat Mainz with three second half goals. The 3-0 win came courtesy of Van Buyten, Gomez and Robben.

Schalke remain third, a point behind Bayern, as Kuranyi and Schmitz gave them a 2-0 win over mid-table Hoffenheim.

Bottom club Hertha Berlin didn’t help their cause too much with a goalless draw at home to fellow strugglers VfL Bochum.

  • Ligue 1
  • Bordeaux are six points clear of second placed Montpellier despite being held to a 0-0 draw at home to Boulogne.

Montpellier had a decent 2-0 home win against Marseille. Lille are third after an early Hazard goal gave them a 1-0 win over Lens.

  • Eridivisie
  • The top two in Holland, PSV and FC Twente, now have identical records having won sixteen and drawn four of their twenty games. PSV are top as they have scored seven more and conceded two less than Twente.

This weekend was Twente’s turn to gain some ground as PSV could only muster a 0-0 draw at Vitesse. Twente beat Roda JC 2-0 with goals from Perez and Ruiz just a minute apart twenty minutes from the end.

  • Portugal
  • Braga and Benfica can still only be separated by goal difference at the top in Portugal. Braga have the edge as they have conceded a remarkable six goals in their seventeen games. That is some record.

They kept another clean sheet this weekend beating Sporting 1-0. Paulo Cesar scored the all important goal on the half hour.

Benfica kept up the pressure with a comfortable 3-1 win over Guimaraes. Aimar had given them the lead but the visitors equalised before half-time. A second half brace from Carlos Martins gave the second placed side the points.

  • SPL
  • Rangers are ten points clear of Celtic in the SPL after they beat bottom club Falkirk 3-0. The goals came from Davis, Fleck and Whittaker.

A second half Rasmussen goal was enough to give Celtic the points at Hamilton, whilst Hibernian are just two points further back after an own goal deep into injury-time gave them a 2-1 win against St Mirren.

  • Greece
  • Panathinaikos remain six points clear of PAOK and their Athens rivals Olympiakos despite being held to a 1-1 draw by the other big Athens side AEK.

Both PAOK and Olympiakos had wins with the only goal of their respective matches.

  • Turkey
  • Fenerbahce lead Galatasaray by a point at the top in Turkey. The leaders had a rampant 5-1 win at struggling Sivasspor whilst Galatasaray had a more difficult day, winning 2-1 at Denizlispor.
