Ever wanted to buy a football club? Newcastle United is up for sale

The owner of Newcastle United Football Club Mike Ashley has announced that the historic club is up for sale, and he hopes that a deal will be struck by Christmas, according to the Guardian.

It is no secret that Mike Ashley has been looking to sell Newcastle United for some time now, but today saw a formal announcement from Ashley’s lawyers stating that the Sports Direct owner wants the club to be sold as quickly as possible. The 53-year old bought the historic football club in July 2007 for £134 million, saving it from financial ruin. However his ownership was a turbulent one, marked by protests from fans and difficult relationships with various managers. As a result Ashley has attempted to sell the club on multiple occasions, though it certainly looks as though this year could see the end of his reign.

It remains to be seen what will happen regarding the Newcastle ownership but the top priority remains staying in the Premier League. The Magpies are in the midst of a successful season under manager Rafa Benitez, currently sit ninth in the table.
