Everton have confirmed they will take part in the 2012 Java Cup in Indonesia as part of their preparations for the Premier League season.
David Moyes’ men are scheduled to face Turkish club Galatasaray and the national sides of Indonesia and Malaysia in the four-day tournament between July 26 and 29 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Marouane Fellaini, who travelled to Jakarta to announce the competition, revealed his excitement regarding the Toffees’ participation and hopes the fixtures can have a lasting impact on youth football in the country.
“I am very happy to be here in Indonesia and it’s great to be playing in a tournament against Galatasaray, Malaysia and Indonesia,” he said.
“I hope that with time Everton will collaborate with Indonesian football to assist in the development of young players and to use their expertise to help build up their infrastructure.
“This is the first time for Everton to come to Indonesia and it is a big moment for us. Hopefully the tournament will prove very popular.”
The 24-year-old also expressed his belief that the tournament will prove fitting preparation for a difficult opening Premier League fixture.
“It is important we are all prepared for the start of the Premier League season against Manchester United on the opening day. For that you need high level games and hopefully this tournament will provide them,” he said.
Everton’s popularity in Asia has increased in recent years thanks to their relationship with main sponsors Chang and the launch of their Chinese Football Dream project.
