The Football Association have confirmed that West Ham have appealed the red card shown to Andy Carroll in their 2-0 win over Swansea City.
Carroll was dismissed with half an hour remaining at Upton Park on Saturday, with referee Howard Webb adjudging him to have struck out at Chico Flores with his arm.
Although replays showed Carroll to have made minimal contact with the top of the Spaniard’s head, Webb had little hesitation in producing the red card.
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce stated after the game that the club intended to challenge the decision, and when contact by Perform on Monday, the FA confirmed that an appeal had been lodged.
Former Liverpool striker Carroll made his first home Premier League start of the season against Swansea, and would miss games against Aston Villa, Norwich City and Southampton should his mandatory three-match ban be upheld.
The FA also confirmed that West Ham have until 1pm on Tuesday to submit their evidence regarding their grounds for appeal.
