FA Cup wrap: MK Dons take bragging rights

A clever late goal from Jon Otsemobor has earned Milton Keynes Dons a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the FA Cup.

Otsemobor flicked Zele Ismail’s shot into the net in the 92nd minute to send the home side through to the third round after Wimbledon captain Steven Gregory missed a great chance to score just minutes earlier.

Sunday’s match pitted two clubs with a fierce rivalry against each other, with MK Dons having been founded when Wimbledon FC was relocated to Milton Keynes, while the visitors were created by fans disappointed by the change, adding plenty of spice to the clash.

MK Dons took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Stephen Gleeson produced a stunning strike into the top corner of the net.

But AFC Wimbledon, who play in League Two, a tier below their hosts, equalised in the 59th minute through Joe Midson.

The visitors looked on track for a replay late in the match and could even have stolen victory only for Gregory to have his one-on-one chance saved by David Martin in the Dons’ goal.

But the visiting fans’ hearts were broken in injury time when a MK Dons corner was partially cleared to Ismail, whose shot was deflected into the net by Otsemobor’s heel.

In the other FA Cup tie on Sunday, Dean Cox and Dave Mooney both scored twice as Leyton Orient won 4-2 away to Alfreton Town.

Alfreton Town, who play in the Conference, took a shock lead at home when Paul Clayton scored in the fourth minute but Cox equalised for Orient midway through the first half with a fine curling strike.

Mooney put Orient in front in the 30th minute and then grabbed a brace just six minutes later with a powerful header.

Ben Tomlinson gave the hosts some hope with a goal in the 52nd minute but Orient held on before Cox wrapped up the victory with an 86th-minute strike.
