Sydney FC coach Frank Farina has refused to rule out making more signings during the transfer window.
Farina has already added Joel Griffiths and Tiago Calvano to his squad and he has until February 14 to bring in further reinforcements.
“If the right one comes along we certainly wouldn’t say no,” Farina told reporters on Thursday.
“Ones we would consider would be a defender or a striker.”
New signing Griffiths impressed on debut during the Sky Blues’ 7-1 demolition of Wellington, but a hip strain means the striker is in doubt for Saturday’s match against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
“He’s not fully match fit at the moment, but he knows his body better than anyone so we’ll be guided by him on how it is, but (we) certainly won’t want to take any risks,” Farina said.
Both Griffiths and Rhyan Grant, who has a calf injury, trained separately from the rest of the squad on Thursday, but Farina said he would give them until match day to prove their fitness.
“We’re basically going to nurse them through and they’ll definitely be travelling,” he said.
“We’ve still got two days so hopefully they’ll be OK.”
Griffiths linked up well with his Italian team-mate Alessandro Del Piero against Wellington and Farina hopes the two get more game time together so they can build on their understanding.
“The early signs last week were encouraging, but again that’s just one game,” Farina said.
“I thought both of them played extremely well for the time they were on and you’d hope that combination continues.”
The Sky Blues have strung some good results together, including two wins in their past two games, but Farina wants his players to show even more consistency.
They will be tested against the Victory, who Farina believes are serious title contenders – along with Central Coast, Adelaide and the Western Sydney Wanderers.
“We know what sort of threats they pose – they’re a good side,” he said.
“Knowing what they’re doing is one thing, stopping them is another.
“If we play well enough we can match any team in the league.”
