FIFA have not discussed the possibility of cancelling the Confederations Cup despite growing civil unrest in Brazil.

The host country has endured several days of large-scale protests and the competition, a dress rehearsal for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had been thought to be under threat.

However, a FIFA spokesperson confirmed to OMNISPORT on Friday that no such action was being considered by the sport’s governing body or the local organising committee (LOC).

“To date, neither FIFA nor the LOC have ever discussed any such possibility,” the official commented.

Many Brazilians are angry at high transport costs and perceived corruption in the South American nation.

The huge cost involved in hosting the World Cup, as well as the 2016 Olympics, is also the source of some concern.

The situation escalated drastically on Thursday when an 18-year-old man was fatally injured after a car ploughed into a group of protestors in Sao Paulo state.
